Yep, that’s me with Matthew Gray Gubler, star of the hit CBS television police drama Criminal Minds. In the show he plays the eccentric genius Dr. Spencer Reid which in some regards isn’t too far off character from the nutty version of Jimmy Olsen he plays in the brand new DC Animated Original Movie All Star Superman.
Gubler is no stranger to character voice acting, as he played the role of Simon in 2007’s Alvin and the Chipmunks, and reprised his role in 2009 with Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. During the panel discussion that followed my interview with Gubler, he mentioned that he really enjoys working on animated films since they represent creativity in its truest sense. With live action, Gubler explained, you’re bound by the constraints of reality, whereas with animation you’re only limited by your own imagination. It’s this freedom that give animated films the ability to fully realize the vision of its creators.
With so much history behind the character of Jimmy Olsen, fans expectations couldn’t be higher. If you’ve seen All Star Superman you’ll know that Gubler’s version is kooky, perhaps even a bit scatterbrained, but that’s not too much of a departure from the Jimmy Olsen we’re been reading about in the Superman comics for decades now. Here’s what Matthew had to say about his role:
Paul Hunter: You voice Jimmy Olsen, one of the most well-known supporting characters in the Superman comics. It felt like you really took a liking to this character, tell me a bit about how you prepared for this role? Did the character come natural to you from day one?
Matthew Gray Gubler: I don’t know, I got really nervous when I first heard that I was going to voice Jimmy Olsen, a known character, and I thought I should really study him and learn everything about him, but then I thought wait, don’t do that or you’ll run the risk of imitating something else. So I came at it with what I hope is a sincere interpretation of Jimmy Olsen as I didn’t want to emulate anybody. Yeah I guess it did come naturally when I think about it. If you like how I voiced him, I’ll say it came naturally and if you don’t like it I’ll say no, no, no it didn’t come naturally (laughs).
PH: One thing I found is that the classic Jimmy Olsen is this prim and proper guy, he’s got a nice haircut and wears a bow tie, but I found your version of him is quite eccentric. Did you enjoy being this more rugged, messy-haired version of Jimmy?
MGG: It’s like John Waters, he was prim and proper from a distance but up close you think wow that guy is kind of crazy, and I like characters like that. I like characters that have more going on than what you see.
PH: What was it like working with Christina Hendricks? I thought it was ironic that you played a red-haired character and she played a brunette character, shouldn’t it have been the other way around? (laughs)
MGG: I’m very good friends with her husband, I was in a movie with Geoffery Arend, and so it was awesome working together, although we did our voicing separately. It’s too bad she can’t be here tonight, working with her was such a pleasure, she’s just great.
PH: I really enjoyed your performance in the movie, thanks a lot for your time Matthew.
